Credential Recognition – Other Jurisdictions

Crane operators certified in other Canadian provinces and territories are allowed to work in BC. Workers from the USA, Ireland, the United Kingdom and a growing number of European countries may also be able to work in BC. This is because we have agreements to recognize each other’s certifications. See a list of these agreements here.

Other applicants need to meet the BC Industry Training Authority requirements to take or challenge theoretical exams. They also need to pass the BC Crane Safety practical test. Find out more about the challenge process here.

To complete the practical test, applicants must have an employer in British Columbia and have access to the  type of crane they want to operate. Anyone moving to Canada to work needs a work permit from Immigration and Citizenship Canada.

If you are interested in working as a crane operator in BC and have a certificate or license from somewhere else, please follow the steps below. If you are a BC Crane Safety certified operator, you could be eligible to work in other jurisdictions. Please contact us for more information.

BC crane credential recognition from other jurisdictions process

  • Register with BC Crane Safety

All crane operators working in British Columbia must be registered with BC Crane Safety. If you haven’t already done so, please register now.

  • Review BC Standards

Crane operators from other jurisdictions are required by WorkSafeBC to review all Occupational Health & Safety Regulation (OHSR) policies, guidelines and standards that apply to BC crane operators. Click here for a list of the relevant materials.

  • Apply for Credential Recognition

Submit an application form along with a copy of your existing credential and all other required documentation. Click here to learn more and for the application form.

  • Application Review

BC Crane Safety will review your application and verify your credential with the issuing authority. Once approved, you will receive a BC Crane Operator designation for a specific crane classification that recognizes your original credential from your home jurisdiction.
